In 378 A.D., a “group of strangers” arrived at Tikal, a major Maya city. The “strangers” were from the central Mexican metropolis of Teotihuacán. A carved monument, discovered in 1960, attests to that event. Six decades later, we understand that episodes of peaceful coexistence and brutal interventions in Maya affairs marked this relationship.
